Why are candles lit for Hanukkah?

Hanukkah is a Talmudic holiday that celebrates an important moment in our history. For 8 days, we celebrate our victory over the Greek army as well as the re-inauguration of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

The lighting of Hanukkah candles symbolizes a miracle that happened during this time. Indeed, the story tells that after defeating the Greek army, the stiffs wanted to inaugurate the temple by lighting the menorah. But the oil having been robbed, they found only one vial of oil. It was supposed to burn for 1 day but thanks to divine help, it burned for 8 days, exactly the time needed to replenish the temple's oil reserves. Thus, during the week of Hanukkah we commemorate this famous miracle of the vial as well as our victory in the face of religious oppression.

The lighting of candles accompanied by his prayers is the only obligatory ritual during this festival. This family ritual must be done in the evening and the candles must burn for at least half an hour after sunset.

What is the lighting order of the Hanukkah candles?

Candles should be arranged from right to left and lit from left to right. An extra candle should be added to the chanukiah each night of the holiday. The lighting of the candles is done by the mistress and the girls of the house. For this, they must use the shamach (ninth candle of the hanukiah) which is placed above the other candles.

What are the Hanukkah prayers?

There are three prayers to be recited when lighting Hanukkah candles. These are actually blessings and must be recited by the householder (or the eldest son in his absence).

"Baruch Ata Ado-nai Elo-henu Melech Haolam Asher Kideshanu Bemitsvotav Vetsivanu Lehadlik Ner Chanukah"

Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to turn on the Chanukah lights.

"Barou'h Ata Ado-nai Elo-hénou Mélè'h Haolam Chéassa Nissim Laavoténou Bayamime Hahème, Bizmane Hazé"

Blessed are You, Lord our G‑d, King of the Universe, who did miracles for our fathers in those days, in this time.

The following blessing should be recited only on the first night of the feast:

"Barou'h Ata Ado-nai Elo-hénou Mélè'h Haolam Chéhé'heyanou Vekiyemanou Vehiguianou Lizmane Hazé"

Blessed are You, L-rd our Gd, King of the Universe, who made us live, exist and come to this moment.
