Why give Hanukkah gifts?

Although it is not a religious obligation, it is customary to give presents to your children during the Hanukkah holiday. Indeed, this symbolic act commemorates the right of the youngest to return to study Torah after the defeat of the Greeks.

Traditionally, the “demei Hanukkah” was offered, a sum of money intended to encourage them in their education. The proximity to the Catholic holiday of Christmas has also made Hanukkah a good time for gift-giving. Moreover, these gifts help maintain the magic and joy of the festival of lights.

When to give Hanukkah gifts?

The best time to give Hanukkah gifts is after the lighting of the menorah as a family. In some families, gifts or money are given each of the 8 evenings of the holiday, in others the gifts are given at the beginning of the week of Hanukkah.

Gift ideas for Hanukkah

If you are trying to find original and fun gift ideas for your children, you have many options to choose from:

● Traditional Gifts: They are a great way to continue Hanukkah traditions. Money, chocolate coins, menorahs and blessings are among the most symbolic gifts during the Festival of Lights.

● Educational gifts: These include books, dreidel and board games. Offering a large puzzle to do with the family on one of Hanukkah nights can also be a very good idea!

● Jewelry: These are beautiful presents that your loved ones will keep all their life. Give them a Star of David or Mezuzah pendant, to celebrate your Jewish roots, or a more luxurious Jewish piece of jewelry.

● Toys: Toys are the inevitable party favors. They are sure to delight your little ones.

● Charitable Giving: How about teaching your children the joy of giving by devoting a night to charity? You can donate money in their name to an association that you have chosen together.

Beyond the material aspect, Hanukkah is about spending time with your family and passing traditions from one generation to the next. So take advantage of each evening of the party to do an activity together and thus create new memories.

Happy Hanukkah!
