A little history...
The 72 Letters of the Breastplate or חשן HOSHEN:
In the Gemara (Yoma 73b), it is said that in addition to the Names of the Tribes engraved on the twelve stones were added the Names of the Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Ia'acob, of blessed memory; as well as the mention "tribes of Yeshouroun" which is a name used to designate the tribes of Israel in texts.
The Names of the Twelve Tribes have a total of 50 letters,
who doesn't remember the 50 gates of Binah.
The addition of the Names of the Three Patriarchs as well as the mention comprising the 22 letters;
to recall the power of the 22 letters of Alef-Bet.
These 22 letters were intercalated in the names of the tribes so that 6 letters appear per stone which gives us 72 letters.
