Shema Israel is Judaism's best-known prayer. Jacob, whose name is Israel, originated this phrase. When Jacob was about to die, he called his sons and made them swear to believe in one Du. The meaning of this prayer is hear O Israel, which means hear Jacob; our D--u is the unique D--u.
Interestingly, the sons of Israel were taught to love Gd. The numerical value of the word AHAVA (the love which is the essence of all creation) is 13. The word EHAD (one) also has a numerical value of 13 and the testimony of Jacob and his sons is pronounced in the presence of 13 people (Jacob and his sons).
