From the Hebrew רפאל which reads rapha ("to heal") and El ("God"), i.e. "God heals"
Raphael, is a character from the Book of Tobias who is part of the Hebrew Bible and is considered a messenger of God.
In this book, he appears disguised as a human, traveling companion of the young Tobias (It is this story that Sara alludes to when she meets Raphael). He calls himself "Azarias, son of the great Ananias". The story recounts the adventures of this journey, during which the protective influence of the angel Raphael is demonstrated in many ways, including defeating a demon who had killed 7 of Sara's husbands.
