What is the deeper meaning of the tallit and why do men of the Jewish faith wear it?
The idea that is essential during Jewish prayer is to connect to Gd
The Tallit is composed of two parts: the shawl and the Tsitsit, that is to say the ritual fringes. The garment envelops the wearer and the Tzitzit hang from each corner. They represent both aspects of Gd's existence. His true essence is totally beyond the reach of our intellectual apprehension, and it is represented by this prayer shawl.
No matter what level of holiness we reach, Gd will always be infinitely holier. It is the tallit that envelops the man who wears it. But, in the other direction, whatever level we can reach, G‑d comes down to us and asks us to address ourselves to Him: He is those Tzitzit who come down to us to be grasped and kissed.
We must bear this in mind when we pray. This is why Jewish men wear a tallit.
